Hodges x The Spring Grove - Roast Review #3
Nestled among a pretty Victorian street on Bloomfield Rd, Kingston upon Thames is The Spring Grove. This Young's pub retains a sort of soft confidence among the residential area of South West London.
After catching up with a friend over a pint and a burger, this shot into my mind when I realised we had time for a roast yesterday.
Usually a beef man, Today I opted for the chicken option, while my wife (that still sounds weird) went for a bespoke chicken-free version, but retaining the gravy.
I honestly don’t remember when I last ate a Sunday roast so this was a delicious treat for the palette. The chicken was well seasoned and paired with cabbage, a carrot and swede mash and a perfectly cooked (and seasoned) Yorkshire pudding. The gravy was very flavoursome, if unusually a little orange in colour, possibly due to the carrot/swede combo.
We shared an apple and berry crumble for pudding, which was perfectly executed, with just the right amount of sweetness from the fruit with a savoury topping, and a light custard to accompany it.
Atmosphere, Service, Value etc
It was fairly quiet for a Sunday, but we were probably up earlier than most with a new puppy at home so the pub was fairly quiet. That being said, we had a fantastic table in front of the large windows and I felt genuinely content after a stressful few months.
All the team were super friendly and the service was fantastic. Prices were standard for the area with the chicken at £14, beef and other options were more towards £20 but we opted for soft drinks so our bill came in at £38, before gratuities.
Could it be improved?
I like a warmed plate with roasts, since they can take a little while to consume and what is worse than cold gravy? Otherwise, another vegetable would have been welcomed, although technically there were three with the carrot and swede mash.
Roast Verdict 9/10 - The Spring Grove, Kingston, SW London
All in all, it was a very enjoyable meal and certainly a very good standard to kickstart the Roast Review project. Let us know of a London pub you’d recommend and we’ll eat on your behalf.
