How to Shave Properly
How to shave properly
For many men, shaving has become a daily chore. But wet shaving was once considered an art form. Not only because of the smoothness of the resulting shave, but because of the skill required to balance and accurately shave with an ultra sharp cut-throat razor.
Cut-throat razors require skill, patience and practice and for some they aren’t practical for every day use. We encourage every man to learn the art of shaving with one, but recommend the our shaving kits to shave properly on a weekly basis.
Learn the art of wet shaving with our shave kit
Plastic or electric shavers have their place, but neither competes with the effectiveness of a wet shave. Upgrade to our shave kit to appreciate the art of shaving. Our guide uses the Hone Type 15a that we supply in our kits, but you can use any quality safety razor. If you’re using a safety razor, replace the blade before you get your hands wet to avoid injury.
Wet shaving is a men’s tradition that you will learn to love
Follow each step carefully to prevent cuts or ingrown hairs on sensitive skin. You shouldn't feel any irritation when using our shaving products correctly. If you do cut yourself while learning, purchase a natural alum mineral block to reduce bleeding from small cuts. Our guide will help you to achieve a barber-standard shave in the comfort of your home.
Pre-shave products aren’t necessary with our shave kits and will compromise the integrity of our natural formulas.
How to Wet Shave Properly in 10 Steps
STEP 1 - Use a scrub to exfoliate skin and agitate hair
Work a small amount to your palm before massaging into your face to cleanse pores and prepare your skin. Rinse thoroughly and wipe away using a bamboo face cloth.
STEP 2 - Prepare your skin
Wherever possible, always shower before shaving. If this isn’t possible use a hot face cloth held against your skin for at least two minutes, ensuring all scrub is removed.
STEP 3 - Applying shave butter
Using clean fingers, apply shave butter through stubble until facial hair is adequately covered. The amount of product required will depend on your hair type and growth.
STEP 4 - Make the first pass
Learning how to shave properly is a skill that improves with practice. Begin shaving at your neck and shave in the direction of hair growth to prevent water from dripping downwards and compromising the shave on your neck - typically a delicate area.
STEP 5 - Shave with hair growth
Make short but controlled passes, keeping the razor at 30 degrees against your skin. Let the razor do the work without applying unnecessary pressure. The angle will come naturally with a little practice.
6. Rinse the razor often
After a pass on each side of the blade, rinse under a running tap to remove hair and cream build up.
7. The second pass should be across hair growth
Adding shave butter as necessary, shave horizontally across the direction of hair, checking for any remaining stubble as you go.
8. The final pass for the ultimate close shave
For intermediate shavers or those with ambition for an ultra-close shave, go against hair growth to remove all traces of hair.
9. Final check and rinse your face
Rinse thoroughly with cold water, a clean face cloth and admire your work and youthful appearance.
10. Apply a silk cream to lock in moisture
If you suffer from dry skin, gently apply a small amount of silk cream across face and neck.
Remember to wash and dry your shave kit to ensure longevity. We find a spare toothbrush a useful tool for cleaning your razor after use.
If You Suffer From Dry or Oily Skin, Consider Your Shaving Products
Consider that unlike many shave products, we do no not use petrochemicals which affect your skin and make it dry or oily. If you find this is the case, we recommend pausing use of other products to figure out which one might be upsetting the moisture balance of your skin.
Learning How To Shave Properly Isn't Difficult
Learning how to shave properly is a skill, but our shave kits with the Type 15a are simple and intuitive to use. You can buy all of the shave products mentioned above in our Hone x Hodges Shave Kit or Reggie's Shave Collection.
